Wildest Dreams

Fall is approaching quickly, so here's a last few quintessential summer shots.  I was embracing that 70's vibe with the bell sleeves and platform espadrilles.  I love the tassels and body chain together, adding a touch of intrigue to a simple look.  I carried this leather Rib and Hull tote everywhere this summer, the rich color and classic silhouette complimented breezy warm-weather textures so effortlessly.

As the New York Fashion week passes and we're on to the European FW's, I'm gathering all sorts of ideas and inspiration from the shows and street style.  70's flair is staying strong, in all its structure and frivolity.  And then the minimalistic looks are standouts as well.  I won't even go down the list of all the trends I'm loving, maybe I'll make another post about that topic.  All I know is I need to pick up the perfect lace-up flats ASAP...

What's getting you excited about the coming fall season?

I don't know about you but I've had Taylor Swift's "Wildest Dreams" on repeat in my head.  The song feels so magical and daring!  The music video is so lovely, sigh.  And that is what this September feels like to me.
I smell it in the air, this fresh creativity and dare to grow.  Some of it is like a refreshing wind of inspiration and courage while another side of it is fear and insecurities that have held me back don't work for me anymore, they have lost their allure.  The anxieties are still getting up in my face, but they don't feel so permissible now.  They are painful, frustrating and cramping my style.  Like shoes that I've grown out of that are so restricting they're intolerable to walk in.  So it's time to shed the old and get a new pair!  I've been itching to take a class on a topic of interest and feel a new boldness to put myself out there with ventures I haven't pursued before.  Thoughts dance across my consciousness like "Why not try it? You have nothing to lose!"  It's in the atmosphere for a reason, daring us to take risks and push to a higher level.  To leap off the edge and discover that we have wings to soar!

Burlap & Baby's Breath

Here's a few shots I took from a close friends' wedding I was a part of in Portland a few weeks ago.  So ethereal, so vintage, so dreamy.  Not to mention I've always wanted to wear a flower crown, now I can check that one off my list!  The reception was in the Elder Hall at Nedd Ludd in Portland, the perfect setting for a boho-vintage wedding celebration.  All the burlap, lace and baby's breath against an eclectic wooden backdrop of knick-knacks and assorted bottles.  Love.  Hop on over to Vafa Photography for the full wedding post, they're the amazing photographers who covered the whole wedding!  Hope you get inspired by this little peek.

Denim Dancer

I've been on the hunt over a year for the perfect oversized, super light blue denim jacket.  And finally I found this baby at Urban Outfitters!  I'm so happy I held out and didn't settle for any that weren't exactly what I was looking for.  I feel like as I get older I've become increasingly more selective when it comes to purchases.  This could be because I have practically no room in my closet after years of collecting my favorite staples (ahem, especially footwear), or it could be chalked up to the fact that I'm more comfortable embracing my personal style, and I don't waste money on items that don't suit me anymore.  But of course I love to try new ideas and trends, I just spin them into my own version of how I would wear it, avoiding items that don't flatter my body type.

The look for this post was definitely street-dancer inspired.  I started catching up on Season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance (one of my all-time favorite shows!) and I am blown away all over again at how much emotion and energy dance awakens in me! Not only am I temped to break out into wild movement every time an inspiring dancer finishes their performance, but I can even feel myself breathing more deeply when I experience someone pouring out their heart on stage.  It's as though I get a glimpse into a world of 10-dimensions when I'm so used to walking around daily in 3.  Very few things make me feel like that.  And when they bring children out to dance with their fathers, mothers or teachers??  I die.  I find myself laughing and crying all at the same time!  There is something so meaningful and supernatural about witnessing that special connection.  I truly believe that there is a higher level of existence that is accessed when you invest your heart, time and efforts into someone else to make them great.  We were meant not only to receive but to give away.  It's a cycle, a circle that must keep looping if we are to live a fulfilling life.   I absolutely love that I can turn on an episode of So You Think You Can Dance and be reminded of the things that matter in life.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Bardot Romance

I have to say, my favorite part of this summer's trends was the return of the high waisted flare and the off-the-shoulder bardot top.  So romantic, so flattering for the feminine figure.  Growing up a couple blocks from the beach in California, I've always been all about that bohemian vibe and the 70's style fits perfectly into that category.  I'm such a fan of looking put together with little effort.

Hope you're having a great summer!

Take Me Away

I just got back from Portland earlier this week, so I've been catching up and getting my bearings together.  I'll post some photos from my trip next week!  It was such a great trip.  Spending quality time with close friends, getting inspired and feeling so loved and known.  Plus Portland is packed with artsy places to eat delicious food.  There is a high value placed on quality and sustainability, so many of the restaurants and food trucks offer creative dishes utilizing fresh, seasonal and local ingredients.  A city after my own heart, I am such a foodie.  I didn't have one bad meal there, and we were exploring the city for 5 days!

Since I was in Portland as a bridesmaid, 5 days straight of wedding festivities and constant group situations really took its toll on me.  Many of my close friends are extroverts.  My friends are the best, and I love that about them!  I am definitely a social butterfly.  But while I love being an introvert at the same time (<-- found this gem on Buzzfeed, you're welcome), I can't handle the level of stimulation, lack of sleep, and nonexistent alone time that many of my extroverted friends can thrive in.  When I talk about extroverts and introverts, I'm talking about how you recharge.  I am able to recover and regain energy from spending time alone and in my thoughts, with no outside stimulation or interference.  If I don't get that time alone too many days in a row then I get so drained, exhausted and irritated and I'm just not myself, at least not a happy content version of myself!  It puts me on edge and sucks me dry.  For extroverts, you don't need as much (if any) alone time to generate energy, you can get rejuvinated when others are around, and even refreshed by the presence of other people!  Most are a combination of extrovert and introvert.  Being introverted doesn't mean you aren't social, it's just a matter of how you recharge.  I would say I'm 80% introvert and 20% extrovert.  That 20% of extrovert thrives in one on one conversations and quality time with a close friend or someone I feel safe and known around.  I can handle doses of crowds or group situations, but if they go on for too many days in a row without any alone time I begin to shrivel up and feel like I'm going to have a melt down.  I need to talk one and one with someone to balance myself out and develop a personal connection.  I used to fight this and run myself ragged, but I'm learning to accept this part of my nature and the way I'm designed, capitalize on it and remember my strengths.  Recognizing when I'm filled up and have the most to offer and when I need to draw boundaries, pack up and retire for the day.  It's been a challenging process for me to embrace and learn to navigate this part of myself.  I feel like I'm missing out when I don't go-go-go and drive myself to be present and interact in every situation my friends are a part of.  Those lies creep in of feeling like I'm lame, no fun, not interesting and that there's something wrong with me if I can't keep up.  And they're so easy to listen to if I don't remember my strengths and who I truly am.  But I am fun, and I'm engaging and inspiring!  I'm a thoughtful, analytical, deep thinker.  A creative mind.  An observer.  I have so many original ideas and ways of seeing the world, a unique perspective to offer.  I'm an activator and someone who gives insight and courage to those I love to help them grow and break through to the next level and pursue their dreams.  My close friends and family love that about me, it's what I'm known for!  And if I don't spend time recharging by myself and pondering thoughts in my mind, interacting and focusing on details and projects that breathe life back into me, then I will feel so burned out and lifeless that I can't give away the very thing I am best at!  The part of the process I'm in now is practicing not being so hard on myself, giving permission and validation to do what I need to do to feel "full" and thrive.  Even if that means not going to every social event my friends are going to, or taking a break from an overstimulating, crowded situation when I haven't recharged for days so that I can regain my sanity.  I'm learning to be okay with that.  Maybe I'll get to the point of loving these healthy boundaries!  Who knows?

That 70's Vibe

Hellooo Monday!

I love Mondays.  It's a fresh start to the week, my only guaranteed day off work and it's rarely crowded anywhere on Mondays.  The best.
I also am in love with this jumpsuit, it makes me feel like a diva straight out of the 70's.  The one-piece, denim and wide-leg flare trend wrapped up into one!

Speaking of trends, the subject of spiritual gifts running in family lines has been highlighted to me a lot this past week.  There are "talents" and "strengths" that run in every family, both down the mother's side and the father's side, and I call them gifts.  For example, a gift of having a "6th sense" to be able to read people and know what's going on behind the scenes or having intuitions, gut feelings and dreams that bring up information you wouldn't know otherwise is a gift.  I recognize this one because it runs in my family, strongly down my mother's generational line.  And the interesting thing is that with any gift, it is multi-faceted and operates differently in my mom than it does in my sister, brother and I.  It may sound odd, but my mom has dreams and intuitions about what's going on with the land, and what has happened in certain places and what needs to be done for healing.  My sister has super sensitive intuition about what's going on with other people that they never told her about.  My brother gets symbolic dreams that tell him things that are about to happen.  And as for me, part of my version is that I both physically and emotionally experience atmospheres.  Say my boss at work is having a hard day filled with anxiety, and I had a totally normal day, peaceful, I went to the gym and read a book.  Then I come into work and I physically feel a weight on my chest, like it's harder to breathe and my head is suddenly spinning so much I can't even walk or talk straight!  That's because I am experiencing what is going on with my boss.  I used to feel like I was unstable and could never predict whether I was going to be "ok" going to certain places or being around certain people, because I didn't understand my gift.  But now I'm able to recognize what I feel like and what my status quo is that day so that when I am physically and emotionally taken over by someone else's whirlwind I know that it's not mine and can deal with it pretty quickly.

A gift that strongly runs down my dad's side of the family is discernment.  In the dictionary it says "the ability to judge well."  The gift of discernment has to do with being able to tell what's going on behind the scenes, knowing something's up and if someone is being honest or taking advantage of you or manipulating you.  It feels like an alarm bell ringing in your head when you feel like someone's motives are not pure and there's something else going on, even if you don't know what it is exactly.  All this talk about spiritual gifts probably has you wondering something along the lines of, "how do I find out mine?"  One way to delve into this arena is to pay attention to what each member of your family is good at "naturally," and try to find a common theme.  Another way is to ask your friends "what do you think I'm good at and known for, and what are my family's strengths?"  Because a sure sign of a gift is that you would think "well doesn't everybody think like that?  Isn't that what everyone does too?"  As with any gift, once you recognize it the next step is to learn how to develop it, to know it's strengths and weaknesses and how to not overextend it.  With discernment, the information that the gift gives you can give you the tendency to put up your guard towards certain people who you can feel aren't being real or honest with you.  And even use it to justify a negative opinion of someone and shutting them out completely.  But the true purpose of this gift isn't to use it against people or build walls around yourself, but to use it as a tool to know that something is up so that you can navigate things wisely and not be taken advantage of, and then to choose to look for the best, the strengths and the "gold" in the person to bring them to a higher level of who they truly are.  My dad really understood this gift and always reminded me growing up to assume the best about people, even if you can feel that there's something else going on.  To never hold judgements and to give others the benefit of the doubt.  Sometimes this felt naive and unwise but I realize that my father taught me this to balance out the gift of discernment from being overextended, so that I wouldn't be suspicious and judgmental every time that alarm bell went off in my head.  As I've grown up and developed in communication skills, I've found it a great practice to trust that the hearts of those close to me is good, that they have good intentions towards me and verbally clarifying if there's any discrepancies I feel going on, instead of making assumptions.

I'm excited for this week because my best friend flies into town and we're headed up to Portland for a wedding!  It's going to be a flurry of fun activities.  I hope you enjoyed stopping by my blog, and have a wonderful week.

xx
